Every once in a while, a manufacturer does something that blows the lid off what is traditionally expected from the brand. Way back in January 1986, South Africans were probably content with the masses of Corollas and Hiluxesi that had infiltrated the local market for two decades. And then the MR2 came along…

The MR2 is hailed as being the first mid-engined sports-oriented car from the Far East and, while the 1,6-litre, four-cylinder, 16-valve engine was not exactly a firebreather, the MR2′s low mass, sophisticated suspension layout and quick steering combined to excite the driver – and one passenger.

In ’86, the exotic design and unusual layout made for significant novel appeal and just like the company’s just done with the 86, every once in a while Toyota shows it can produce exciting automobiles.
