Five Car Fantasy Garage: John Smit

Every car fan has played this game. Close your eyes and imagine that you are walking towards a building with five closed garage doors. It can be any building, old or new, but the important thing is that it is yours and, as such, the contents of said garages are also yours. Five doors, five cars. So, with price and availability taken out of the equation, which cars would you have hidden behind each door?

To date we’ve visited twelve garages, one for each member of the CAR team. This week we expand the series to include lists from some of South Africa’s best-loved car fans. First up is Springbok legend John Smit!

John is the most capped Springbok of all time and captained the Bokke in 64 of his 111 appearances in the green and gold. Currently plying his trade at English club Saracens, John was inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame in October 2011.

Shelby 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback

My first choice without doubt is the legendary Shelby 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. It’s just always been that car for me and I am currently building my own ’67 Fastback.

Everyone wants a Prancing Horse and my choice from the Ferrari stable is not old-school, but rather straight out of the box – in all her 12-cylinder glory. The F12berlinetta.

Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG

Out of the models produced by German marques, I would take the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG. I’ve always loved the looks of this vehicle and it’s pretty capable as well.

Aston Martin Vantage V12 Black

The Poms contribute 2 out of the 5 cars in my dream garage and first up is an Aston Martin Vantage V12 Black. To me this car is pure class and would cause less of an irritation to other motorists at a traffic light than “my” red Ferrari!!!

Land Rover Defender 110

Then my second British car is, wait for it… a Land Rover Defender 110!!! Some might say it’s a crazy choice, but the Defender is an icon and everybody needs a day-to-day car to drive the kids, dogs, and jet skis around. What kind of South African man would you be if you didn’t own one of these? Oh yes I know, the boring kind that drives the Japanese version!!! Oh yes and did I mention how cool it is to drive past random people in other Defenders and everyone greets one another with a flash of the lights or a raise of the hand?!
