Every car fan has played this game. Close your eyes and imagine that you are walking towards a building with five closed garage doors. It can be any building, old or new, but the important thing is that it is yours and, as such, the contents of said garages are also yours. Five doors, five cars. So, with price and availability taken out of the equation, which cars would you have hidden behind each door?

With each member of the CAR team having given you a personal tour of their dream garage we invited Springbok legend John Smit and beauty Jo-Ann Strauss to submit their own five-car fantasy garages. Last week we were invited to award-winning breakfast radio DJ Ryan O’Connor’s garage and this week we venture back onto the rugby field.

With the 2012 Currie Cup heading into its business end this coming weekend, let it not be said that Cape Town-based CAR magazine isn’t sporting enough to give just one more former Sharks player an opportunity to share his passion for cars. Currently plying this trade with the Toyota Verblitz squad in the Japanese Top League, Ryan Kankowski has 75 caps for the Sharks at Super Rugby level and has donned the Springbok jersey on 20 occasions.

We wonder whether John Smit will be handing over the keys to his Ford Mustang when these two are eventually reunited back in Durban.

WP, jou lekker ding! – ed

Number one would have to be the new Ferrari Enzo that’s being unveiled next year at the Geneva Auto Show, I hope.. the original Enzo was amazing, so I’d love to see what this new one could do.

Bugatti Veyron

Would probably be my number one if I wasn’t such a Ferrari fan. Shouldn’t need an explanation on why I’d want this car. Pure power and speed.

Lamborghini Reventon

In my opinion, the most beautiful and powerful Lambo ever built.

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Raw American power. I think every person who loves cars has an affinity for this particular model. Sounds amazing and there’s no computer helping you keep the car on the road.

BMW M5

I’m a big fan of BMW and would love to drive this car. From what I’ve seen of this car on the track it looks like a lot of fun to drive..

Cool selection, l’d probably have your 2-5 selections though 1 would be the Mclaren instead of the Enzo. Enzo in a epic car no doubt.

  • Emmerich

Boring selection. No doubt these are great cars, but they’re common knowledge to every man on the street. I would’ve liked to see a real petrol-head / car enthusiast give their list!

  • Mpumi

OUt of curiosity Emmerich. What would be on your list?

  • Emmerich

Well, for starters, what about a TVR Cerbera Speed 12, Mercedes Benz 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ (1958), Ford GT, McLaren F1, Lexus LFA 2010, McLaren M6 GTR (1971), Honda NSX, Nissan GTR, Subaru Imprexa WRX STI, Lamborghini Muira….to name but a few.
The motor industry has dished up so many fantastic cars over the years, it’s hard to believe these are the best cars Kankowski can dish up. Apart from the Shelby, all these cars were produced in the last decade. And the Shelby’s only there because it’s been made a hit by the movie ‘Gone in 60 seconds’.
Delve deeper into the archives, some truly remarkable machines exist!
