Another famous South African special that was born to clear the way for a racing programme was the so-called Opel Kadett Superboss, or the Kadett 200 GSi 16V S as it was officially known. Although the car was a great success on the track and road-going versions now have a cult-following, our test was not without its problems, as our test figures were hardly any better than those achieved by the standard “Big Boss” 2,0i Kadett tested previously. In any event, 0-100 km/h in 7,64 seconds is not to be sniffed at.

A real rocket! Just love it!

I want one so badly. Howeve finding a unmolested one will be very hard. All these morons adding after market crap and turbo’s are destroying a true SA classic. People like them should be stoned or their licences revoked. If you have one, look after it. Will be a valuable collectors’ item soon

a 1.6 corolla RSi 20v, which is stock standard with no LSD does 0-100 in 7.71 seconds…..makes this look a bit slow. not bad for a 1587cc?

  • Classic Cult Car says

A 24 year old Supie with minor factory upgrades with increased power from 115kw to 125kw (10kw) more will always be faster than a 14 year old Rxi or Rsi Corolla 1.6 20valve with a hi tech variable valve timing engine with a 4 throttle body side draughts. It makes a Rsi look as if its standing still. Super boss was a hero then and today its a legend. A thousand years from now it will have mythical status. If a Corolla can manage the same thing then I’ll jump out of my grave. Besides the Rsi Corolla engines suffered with reliability issues. There always seem to be a trail of black smoke following them around.

How can you say standing still? 0-100 for the superboss in 7.64 with a hell of a lot of mods, which are not minor indeed. The Rsi 0-100 in 7.71 which isnt bad at all considering the displacment issue , No LSD, no shrick cams and dyno tune from the factory.

The Superboss even has a greater power to weight ratio than the Rsi.

If the same mods are applied to the 20v then the result will be much different.

RSi cannot beat GSi Opel rules!

    • keith

of course, the superboss has an LSD, flowed head, shrick cams, greater power to weight and is also dyno tuned. 0-100 time is still not impressive considering that the 20v has been around since 1990

1600 20valve twincam 4speed= 0-100 times in mid 8sec bracket and top speed just over 200km/h even with the extra 6th gear,it makes 115kw close to 8000revs and 157 nm toqure,so u got to rev the crap out of it if u want it to go!

  • teez

I meant speed lol. The 20v Rxi/Rsi is a 1600 twincam 20valve with individual throttle bodies,300cc injectors, variable valve timing, high compression pistons and branches and makes 115kw@8000revs and 157nm torque @6000revs this 7years after the superboss was produced and still rxi/rsi is slower than the 200iE 16v astra hell the astra is heavier than a corrola, astra makes 115kw and 203nm torque. RunX rsi is a 1800 twincam 20v with revised intake, vvti, branches its got technology on its side yet it produces figures like 0-100 in 7.9 seconds and 222km/h even with 141kw and a 6th gear yet 22years ago the opel GSI 16vS aka the ‘Superboss’ did 0-100 in 7.6sec and 226km/h!!! The street superboss’ was down-tuned version of the group N supie which made ±140kw

  • keith

the 4age silvertop engine was released in 1990 in japan and was rated 118kw. The B16a in the crx was released in 1988. Both engines have less capacity and no LSD, shrick cams and flowed head and will still stick neck and neck with the c20xe. Its just that SA never had the taste of real japanese cars eg R34 GTR, Supra, RX7 to name but a few.

    • keith

The maus nissan sentra with a power to weigth of 108kw/tonne ( maus after market tuning intake, header exhast and cams). That car does 0-100 in 7.49 seconds and 1km sprint of 27.87 seconds. It has a less power to weight ration than the superboss and less mods and that sr20de engine is from the 80′s!

  • veedub

as a die hard vw fanatic I have to say the superboss is an incredible car , with cult like status comparing a corolla to it is just wrong lol
