Nascar often comes in for some criticism from fans of other forms of motor racing for being ever-so-slightly boring. With much of the series taking place on oval tracks, many of the overtaking manoeuvres are down to slip-streaming and choosing the best line through banked corners while only steering to the left. Every now and then, though, the Nascar circus heads to a more conventional track (with right-hand turns) and these same, often feisty, drivers are forced to adjust their driving styles accordingly.
Here’s what happened on the final lap at Watkins Glen with three drivers competing out for line honours. It’s worth noting that not one complaint, stewards warning, driver penalty, or Twitter war of words occurred after the event.
