Chris Harris finds out

It’s the Toyota that driving enthusiasts all over the world are waiting for… the rear-wheel drive, relatively affordable Toyota GT 86. Already undergoing testing in South Africa for introduction around mid-year, the GT 86 was co-developed with Subaru and packs a 2,0-litre boxer engine with 147 kW. You can read a full driving impression in the February issue of CAR, currently on sale. But now, the big questions… Is it fun? Does it slide? Can it make Chris Harris giggle like a schoolgirl? Find out on this video…

This Toyota FT 86 Sportscar, as it is labelled, leaves many questions answered. Some of the above and to add them, my two pence question. The engine of this car produces 147Kw of power, identical to that produced by VW Golf 5 GTi about 4 years ago. What surprises me and is relative to my anxiety, is that the Golf 5 GTi produces 280Nm of torque and this Toyota ONLY a mere 206Nm. Why is the torque so small relative to the kilowatts produced. Surely it should be much of a muchness when compared to that of the Golf 5s torque. Oh, My 1997 Alfa 2.0 145 produces 110Kw and 187Nm of torque and the Toyota RunX RSi – 141Kw and ONLY 180Nm of torque. Someone please explain, I beg to understand.I am not into figures BUT from what I understand is that the better the torque figures (relative to vehicle mass) the better the performance and hill climb ability and the flatter the hills.

BC its a NA engine and not turboed…

    Hi t-rex,

My 1997 Alfa 2.0 145 with 110kw has 187Nm torque and RunX Rsi with 141kw has 180Nm of Torque. BOTH are Naturally/Normally Aspirated. Why the massive kilowatts and so normal torque. The old generation BMW 325i engine pushed out 140 kilowatts and rolled out 245Nm. of torque, and although it has lesser kilowatts, theoritically, than the RunX Rsi, it has LOADS of torque more than the RSi.

Its the boxter engine boet….and only 4 cylinders not 6 like your old 325i.The old 2L boxter in the impreza was only 110kw and 195mn at 5500rpm.By uping the rev to 7200rpm u get the extra 30kw and only 16mn more.Remember thy only upped the rev and fitted Yamaha heads on this Quad Cam engin.

what a joke. a 1997 win turbo supra with 206kw/440Nm will smoke this and any m3 of today.
