The good ol’ days of local motorsport: Terry Moss wins at Kyalami

With so much cause for concern over the current state of local motorsport, and especially the dwindling numbers of spectators at circuit racing, we remember the excitement around the world-class cars and drivers that competed (some still are) in our local championships.  At this particular round of the South African Super  Touring Car Championship in 1995, Kyalami was struck by a Highveld thunderstorm – leaving he track treacherously slippery in certain parts.

The race sees Grant McCleery slide into the back of Chris Aberdeen’s Audi 80 quattro and Shaun van der Linde and Sabine Schmitz (her surname was Reck during the time she was married) ending up in the kitty litter soon after the start. Mike Brigg’s Opel Vectra also fatally losing traction after the  main strait heading into turn 1 chasing Terry Moss’s Audi. All the usual suspects like our track test driver Deon Joubert, Giniel de Villiers, Anthony Taylor and Steve Wyndham were there as well.

Toward the end “Supervan” Sarel van der Merwe put on a herculean effort to chase down Moss’s all-wheel drive Audi in the wet with his Ford Mondeo, but Moss kept his cool and held off the legendary multiple track and rally champ to take victory.
