Brazilian system gets cycling inmates to generate green energy

Now here’s a novel idea! Inmates from a Brazilian prison are now given the opportunity to lower their sentences, get exercise, and provide clean energy, through cycling in jail!

South Africa has quite a large prison population and electricity supply problems. Sounds like a potential win-win for us then! The inmates in Brazil cycle on bicycles connected to the main power supply of the nearby city, and their efforts eventually turn into “clean” household energy.

The system is structured in such a way that for each 24 hours of cycling, the inmate’s sentence is reduced by a day. So, no wonder there has been no shortage of candidates.

The only negative we can think about with this system is that you end up with faster, fitter repeat offenders…
