The name Hilux is integral to the South African motoring lexicon. Since its original launch in the mid-1980s, the Hilux has become the favourite double-cab on the South African market and this is the first road test of the 2,2-litre petrol engine model that we published in the July 1991 issue. Air-conditioning was an option at R2 750 while the sprint from zero to 100 km/h took a leisurely 19,58 seconds. The latest 4×4 Hilux CAR tested completed that benchmark in 12,7 seconds.
